The purpose of establishing The Japanese Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism (JSCOS)

The Japanese Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism (JSCOS) is due to be launched in the summer of 2018. We are preparing to establish a Japanese version of the European Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism (SCOS), which already has over a 35-year history. There is also the Australasian Caucus of the Standing Conference on Organizational Symbolism (ACSCOS) that conducts similar activities in Australia and New Zealand.

JSCOS will be positioned as a conference that researches the field of organizational theory in Japan from an international perspective. By broadly conceiving organizational discourse in terms of organizational symbolism and critical management, JSCOS aims to be a place where researchers can actively debate theories regarding organizations in friendly competition from a wide range of perspectives. This will not only be limited to qualitative analyses based on a broadly defined understanding of social constructivism, but will more widely include quantitative analyses grounded in logical positivism and critical rationalism. In particular, JSCOS is planning to focus on methodological research, which has been weak in Japan, and debate both theory and methodological approaches such as empirical analysis. Furthermore, in order to promote the internationalization of research, we are thinking of positioning JSCOS as an international conference and having its proceedings conducted in English. We also intend for JSCOS to help develop Japanese business administration internationally, especially through the training of young researchers.

Furthermore, we are planning to release “The Journal of Organization and Discourse” (tentative name) as an international publication in English with the aim of securing an impact factor from the publisher SAGE.

The SCOS general meeting will be hosted at Meiji University in 2018 from August 17 to 20, and we plan to hold the founding meeting of JSCOS on this occasion.

We aim to develop this conference not only in Japan but more broadly in Asia through coordinating with SCOS and ACSCOS.

We hope that many of you will be able to participate in JSCOS.
